Title: how late can we transplant? Post by: flower power on November 16, 2008, 10:54:38 AM I moved to the 'Burgh in August and transplanted many of my favorite flowers and shrubs in September from the DuBois house.
I have found out I must move them again as excavation is to begin here next week. Can I move the Althea, Rhodo, hydrangea and my giant lillies, columbine, lupine etc. again this late in the year? It is probably a bit late to move anything since they need time to develop a good root system before the ground freezes. Fall is the time that plants make a lot of their roots. You have a little more leeway in zone 6 than we do here in zone 5. One of the consequences of planting too late is that the root system won't take hold and the plant will heave out of the ground over the winter.
I'd say move them since you have to do it and mulch them good. The rhododendrons are probably going to be the trickiest since they are evergreen.
