Colorful Shade-Loving Perennials

Hi!
Can anyone suggest some
colorful
shade-loving perennials that I can put in my front landscaping? I have a huge maple tree that shades the front of my house and I love it, but the things I plant seem to struggle for some sunlight. I have hostas there, as well as holly, a lilac bush, rhododendron, and several other things but I need a
BAM
! of color in there. Any ideas? Thanks!

That is a hard one because most perennials bloom for only a short period of time. Astilbe is a good late spring blooming one that comes in shades ranging from white to deep rose. There is some variation in the blooming time so you do get about a month of blooms.
If the shade isn't too deep daylilies will bloom. That would give you a really wide range of blooming times as some start in June and others bloom well into August.
A late summer-early fall blooming shade plant that I really like is aconite or
monks hood.
It has a fascinating history too.

Hi there!
If you can take the trouble of a digging few new holes (granted you have nice dirt and a water supply as that tree will sap your other plants water up quickly), I always add a few colorful impatiens in my shade perennials. WOW! They do not grow super tall but they really branch out. No deadheading needed and I put in just white and I love it but they come in many beautiful colors. After all that hype, should I tell you??? I feel I must....
THEY ARE ANNUALS....
but worth the little trouble to add yearly!

Thanks lav and lisa. I have planted impatiens before but they end up looking SO very spindly, which I had attributed to lack of sunlight. is this so?
I may look into some daylilies. Thanks!

I think that you are probably right that impatiens tend to get leggy if they don't get enough sun. Some of the newer ones, especially the New Guinea impatiens, will take a lot of sun. You could try pinching them back.
If you do want to try annuals how about coleus? The colors are fantastic and they glow in the shade.
Why not try one daylily to see if it will bloom where you want to put it? We lost a pear tree that was shading some daylilies and it was just enough extra sun to make them bloom this year. The daylilies were at the foot of a slope in the north part of the yard with the tree between them and the sun.

I wanted to give my 2 cents on this one also suggesting impatiens, but I couldn't get registered-thanks Lavender. I like to plunk annuals in with perenials. I can control the spreading and I can try new plants after reading forums like this. The colors choices for impatiens seem endless anymore.

Thanks, all, for the info. It's too late to plant anything now, but next year it'll be looking nice. Thanks for the tips!

Although you seemed satisfied with the answers that you got ,I was chafing at the bit trying to figure out how to do this. If It`s all the same to you I wanted to tell you some plants I`ve tried. I don`t know how shady your lot is but here are some that like dappled sunlight. Brown eyed susan, primrose, spiderwort, forget me nots, nicatinia,Hardy japanese anenome, balloon flower, and bleeding heart. For deep shade I`d go mostly woodland plants but there are not too many really showey ones. I plant daffodils, bloodroot, and trillium.

Hi, thanks for your response. A few years ago we cut some of the lower-hanging branches off so we do have some light under there. My wish was to put purple echinachea or brown eyed susans in there, maybe I will try those. They will have the best impact for late summer, I think. I'd like to stagger the plantings for maximum monthly show effect.
I planted a calendula from seedling this year and I LOVE it, it would be the perfect splash of color but I think they need fuller sun.
I was also thinking, to get a few hanging basket stakes and hang some fuschia in there. I bought a HUUUUGE one in the spring and hung it in full sun on my deck and now it has dwindled. Still has color but you can see that it suffered from the direct sun. Ya live and learn!

I'm not sure about the echinacea. I have some up at the edge of they yard where they get some shade and they never do bloom. They are a sun lover. I think the brown eyed Susan's might be a bit more tolerant. The ones in the embankment garden next to Penn State bloom with some shade from the tree that is in there.
There is an article from our newsletter on the new coral bells that have come on the market recently. It is entitled "Something for your Garden". They do well in dappled shade and the leaf colors on the Dolce series are beautiful. Lowe's has them. They also had a purple one that was almost good enough to eat.
Right now they have Siberian bugloss which has a pretty silvery leaf. I'm hoping it goes on sale soon. I kind of got carried away on the coral bells.
I don't know about fuchsia. There seem to be different varieties that are more sun tolerant than others. I think that a little shade never hurts a potted plant. They are growing in unnatural conditions and really can't be expected to take bright sun.
The hostas are in bloom now. The white one that I got from "muddy paws" has the most gorgeous white flower. It looks like a small Easter lily.
