I was given a box of Canna Lily Roots(?) last night. Some had sprouts. Which should I pick to plant? Will there be time this late in the year for anything to happen? I might as well ask now-how do I dig them up to winter? Do I split anything?

I'd plant them without splitting them and dig them up after the first frost.

I do agree with lavender.  This is what I`d do next .Put them in plastic grocery bags or bag ,depending on how many you have. If you have a lot of large clumps, use 2or3. Water them lightly  and tie the tops loosely. If your basement has any kind of light source, put the bags in that vicinity but not next to the window. Sprinkle a little water on them every so often but don`t forget that you have them, and by spring you should some hulking big rhisomes. Yes divide them before planting, one or ywo per hole depending on how big they are.
