How Hardy are Cannas? PDF Print E-mail
The number of canna species has been reduced to 19, more or less, depending on which classification system that is being consulted. The original species are all from tropical or subtropical areas and have never been considered hardy in areas above zone 10. This idea may be changing

Increasing Your Bulb Supply PDF Print E-mail
Fall is the time to divide your bulbs. Dividing not only increases the number of your bulbs but rejuvenates the plantings. Crowded bulbs are competing for water and nutrients and will not flower with the abandon of bulbs that are divided every three or four years. There are exceptions to this rule; crocus and daffodils can be left for many years without dividing and only need to be divided when the flowering decreases.

Cat Mint as an Alternative to Lavender PDF Print E-mail
One of our garden club members sent an interesting article on catmint (Nepeta faassenii )as an alternative to lavender. Lavender is a tricky proposition in our area. Not only is it marginally hardy but it needs excellent drainage.

Mary Jo was delighted to find two varieties of hardy anemones that she has been reading about. The other discovery was a white drumstick primrose

Do you have a favorite color? If you do has it ever occurred to you that there might be an advantage to being attracted to certain hues? There haven’t been very many studies done on color preferences but it is indicated that animals and insects that can perceive color are often attracted to specific colors.
