There were a number of interesting
plants available this year at Elliott Park; one that I have never seen at any
of our
local plant sources is hardy cyclamen. This plant is hardy to zone 5 unlike the florist’s cyclamen
which we buy in the spring to brighten our windowsills. That variety is Cyclamen persicum and is only hardy to 25 degrees.

We have gotten three e-mail messages
with the information that the Emerald Ash Borer has been found infesting trees
in Butler and Montgomery Counties. Both counties are now quarantined and
ash trees, ash firewood or any other part of the tree cannot be exported from
these areas.

Sweet Soil is a project that raises frugality to the 100th power. It represents not the sort of hoarding that results in cupboards stacked with newspapers from 1956 but the kind that turns newspapers into a useful product that enhances the environment. The scope of this project is so huge that you keep expecting to see the "little engine the could" chugging over the compost pile or the "ant" tugging his "rubber tree plant" over the horizon. We’re talking environmental Disney World here. |

I left you with a picture of a composting toilet last month that was taken at one of the lodges in Yellow Creek State Park near Indiana, PA. Except for a sign that advised that the lid be kept down and the lack of a flushing mechanism this unit closely resembled standard bathroom equipment. At first glance this appeared to be a wonderful solution to non-plumbed garages, sheds and camps. Why doesn’t everyone have one of these things? |

Do you know there are 15 official divisions of tulips? Knowing their characteristics and blooming times makes it possible to get a succession of tulips through out the spring. It also insures against the possibility that your shorter varieties will wind up at the back of the border. |
