Ah, the joys of shrimp scampi, garlic toast and, for the very adventuresome, garlic soup. All is not so merry the next day when the ghost of devoured garlic comes back to haunt the gluttonous gourmet. Garlic is not just a lingering odor in the mouth that can be washed out with a dose of mouthwash. Even diligent brushing and flossing doesn’t get rid of it. Knock on wood, one of those odd things that people do for which they can not give much of an explanation. We think that it’s just superstition and it prevents bad luck from plaguing whatever is under discussion. Knocking on wood, however, has a long tradition and it has everything to do with trees and their importance in mythology and religion. Knocking on wood or touching wood was a way of asking for the protection of the spirit of the tree. Bacteria can wreck havoc in our bodies or help us enrich our soil; spoil our food or help with our digestion. Mining engineers have come up with a new and fascinating use for them in an effort to reduce the environmentally harmful chemicals that are needed to extract metals and minerals from low grade ores. Low grade ores are those that have less concentrated quantities of metals widely scattered throughout the rock. |

The fields were dead, the year would soon die and the reaper would take his toll of human life. In this season of death, especially on one night, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead blurred and the sprits roamed free once again in the world.; free to destroy crops, create trouble and bring evil to their erstwhile neighbors.

This has been a fall to remember here on Huey Lane. August 1st a cat I rescued three days previous had six kittens and our Muscovey duck started setting on a clutch of eggs, late in the season so I was dubious of any survival. One of the driest summers and warmest falls, yet I had a very productive garden. |
